The symptom of dizziness is one of the most common complaints that brings people to the doctor’s office. It can be described as a feeling of being unbalanced, but it is not just a feeling of lightheadedness. Often when dizziness is experienced while lying down it feels like we are on a merry go round. People usually feel that the room is spinning themselves. This type of feeling is different to feeling lightheaded and is medically referred to as vertigo. Fortunately for dizziness when lying down there is an easy cure that can be performed at home.

One of the most frequent causes of dizziness when lying down is called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo also known as BPPV. This type of dizziness is specifically triggered by movements or positions of the head. Lying down is a typical trigger. Other common triggers can include rolling over in bed, looking upwards and bending over. There are many different causes of vertigo and the cause of this one is benign, meaning that there is not an underlying life threatening process going on. But you can still injure yourself during a dizziness attack. And while it is not life threatening, many people find it annoying, debilitating and scary to have dizziness when lying down.

The medical approach to non-life threatening conditions such as dizziness when lying down caused by BPPV is very non caring. People are usually sent on their way told ‘it’s nothing to worry about’ or just given a drug prescription. Taking drugs for this condition is not the answer. All the drugs do is de-sensitize your nervous system so feelings of dizziness and nausea are felt less. This approach just addresses the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem. If you stopped taking your drugs you would still feel dizzy.

The good news is that for those who have dizziness when lying down because of benign positional vertigo there is an effective drug free treatment. Medical science knows what causes this type of vertigo. In the inner ear are our balance organs. These are fluid filled canals with tiny balance receptor. With movement of the head the receptors are activated and they communicate this movement to the brain so we have an awareness of our movement. With BPPV there are some loose tiny particles in the fluid that disrupt the balance receptors and make them send incorrect signals to the brain. This happens with certain head position which is why dizziness when lying down is experienced.

For nearly three decades a select few practitioners have been curing dizziness when lying down. The technique they use was discovered by a medical doctor and has been proven by research. However, many doctors still remain ignorant of it or simply do not know how to do it correctly. The choice of putting pen to pad and writing a script seems easier for some. It is quick and easy and most people feel improvements within one day. The only thing you have to lose is your dizziness, so why don’t you give it a go!
